Wrestling Travel is saddened to learn that James Harris, better known as Kamala, has passed away.

Harris, 70-years old, passed away after suffering from numerous health problems over the last few years.

‘The Ugandan Giant’ was best known for his time in WWE, where his stardom grew.

Harris began his career in professional wrestling in 1978, and was trained by Tim Hampton.

He went on to perform for Continental Wrestling Association, Mid-South Wrestling, World Class Championship Wrestling, WWE and many more.

His Kamala gimmick began in 1982 whilst at Continental Wrestling Association, and was the brain child of Jerry Lawler and Jerry Jarrett.

Harris’ last mainstream wrestling appearance came at TNA’s Slammiversary pay-per-view event in June 2008, where he was a guest at Jay Lethal and So Cal Val’s storyline wedding.

The Kamala character’s last appearances in WWE were in the Gimmick Battle Royal at WrestleMania 17, and his last being on an episode of Monday Night Raw against Umaga.

The Kamala character has yet to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

His health troubles started in 2011, and have plagued the rest of his life ever since, resulting life saving emergency surgery in November 2017.

It has been reported that Harris contracted Coronavirus, Covid-19, on 5th August and was hospitalised, and passed away whilst there.

Many wrestling personalities have had there say on the passing of one of the great characters of all time.
